Ghostwatch

I recently had the pleasure to listen to Ian Evans' EP Ghostwatch. He had me at the first song; how can you not like a song that contains references to Doctor Who?

Ghostwatch is a rather dark EP featuring lyrics such as "I can sense something evil outside the TARDIS", "they kissed, so I pretend she doesn't exist now", and "heaving with lust outside your window" from "Ghostwatch", "Too Tasty for You, Lager Boy?", and "Storm in a Teacup" respectively. Okay, maybe that last line is more disturbing than dark, but the point remains that - at least message-wise - this is not an upbeat album.

However, the music is rather upbeat and lively. There is a clear focus on rhythm and the music has a good - even danceable - beat. The only complaint I have is that the mixing could have been altered a bit so that the vocals were more pronounced; they seem to be a bit drowned out by the guitar.

Besides Doctor Who, there are numerous other cultural references. These include The Odyssey, George Bush, The Rockettes, and others. I have to admit, there are some references on the EP that I did not get (probably because Ian and I are on different sides of the Atlantic), but the songs' messages still come through without them.

Overall, this is a strong album. The mixing level issue that I had is easy to look past since the other aspects more than make up for this deficiency. I would highly recommend this Ghostwatch to any Alternative fan.
