Head Like a Hole (UK)

Okay, let me start off by saying, if you don't like "Head Like a Hole" you will not like this single. If, on the other hand, this is one of your favorite tracks from the Pretty Hate Machine album, you are in luck as the only songs on this album are variations on this theme.

"Head Like a Hole (Slate)" is the closest to the original track and does not bear much discussion. "Head Like a Hole (Copper)" is more electronic sounding than the original, but loses some of the hard-edged feel. "Head Like a Hole (Opal)", only available on the UK version, is the only variant release that includes the word "of" in the phrase "God of Money" and also says "You know who you are" instead of having a synthesized sample; in other words, this is the only version that actually follows the printed lyrics in Pretty Hate Machine.

The opal version also sounds the most like other industrial bands and is more akin to Front 242 than it is to many other Nine Inch Nails songs.

For those wanting more tracks, I would recommend buying Head Like a Hole (US) with ten songs and a bonus statement, but the UK version is the only way to get the Opal version which is well worth the price of the single.
