Recently, I was sent a copy of One Alternative's album Air Sculpture album. This instrumental album is very evocative and conveys its messages very well without words.
The messages relayed are numerous. "Birdland" fells like birds singing and fighting, while "Blue Heron Sky" feels like birds circling. Songs such as "Joyful Arrival" and "Adrift" bring to mind travel through an ocean voyage and a balloon on currents of air respectively. Given that the name is "Adrift" and not "Aloft", One Alternative may have been intending a more nautical theme; however, air currents and water currents are pretty similar. I like the title of "You've Had Enough Air", but I had trouble discerning the meaning.
The influences are as varied as the messages. The lively track, "Birdland" exhibits Jazz leanings. While, "Layers" with its Baroque sound feels as though a harpsichord would fit in easily. Stylings of Jazz, Blues, and Classic Rock can all be heard in "You've Had Enough Air". Jazz seems to be the most pronounced style though and can be heard on many of the tracks - either alone or mixed with elements of other genres.
The music itself is complex and captivates the listener. Some of this complexity is due to the mixing of styles within a single track. Another reason for the complexity is that the primary component of the album - Jazz - typically creates music that changes frequently, dynamically, and fluidly. Finally, some of the tracks, most notably the aptly named "Layers", have very textured music with ephemeral intruments and themes that come and go.
Fans of Jazz and art music should apprecieate Air Scultpture as well as anyone looking for an album to unwind to.
