Land of Confusion Analysis
Yet again, I must apologize for the length of time between posts; my computer has been locking up randomly for the last couple of weeks and I have finally tracked down this issue to a faulty video card. Now that the problem has been resolved, I bring you the second installment of my new video analysis series.
Last time, for those who have not read it, I examined “If Anyone Gets Funked Up (It’s Gonna Be You)” by George Clinton. This time, I will actually be critiquing two videos and comparing and contrasting them: “Land of Confusion” by Genesis and Disturbed’s “Land of Confusion”. The adage states that one should never ascribe to malice what can adequately be ascribed to incompetence; from the two videos it appears that Genesis assumes that our world is ran by incompetents while Disturbed believes that our rulers are malicious.
Incidences of incompetence are many in the Genesis incarnation and most of them involve Ronald Reagan; in fairness this is probably due to the fact that most of the focus of the video revolves around Reagan and is probably not a commentary on his presidency. The first incident – which is repeated several times in the video – is Reagan mistaking an Ape for Nancy. Near the end, when he attempts to take a drink of water, he splashes it behind him without any of it reaching his mouth – fortunately Nancy is wearing a snorkel in preparation. And possibly the most egregious incident is when Reagan carelessly pushes the missile launch button instead of the nurse button.
Disturbed’s version of this video is much darker with a mysterious cowled figure leading an uprising of citizens against rulers bent on subjugating and killing their subjects. World leaders assemble under a flag emblazoned with the dollar sign. These leaders send forth soldiers to march on cities wearing similar emblems on their sleeves; to make it clear that Disturbed is not singling out any particular country as the source of corruption, but rather all governments – flags of Japan, France, Great Britain, the United States, and Russia supplant the dollar insignia on the marching soldiers’ sleeves.
The cowled figure of the Disturbed video – who could be any of us as his face is never shown – indicates that in fact it is ordinary citizens who must make the world better; during the line “Superman, where are you now” a paper with the letter “S” blows onto his chest and is promptly ripped away letting the viewer know that this man is nothing special. The Genesis video on the other hand, shows an incompetent leader attempting to play Superman without much success. This in its own way suggests that we shouldn’t look to our political leaders to fix all of the world’s problems for us.
In many ways, both videos have the same messages: governments should not be trusted, ordinary citizens should fix the problems in the world and not expect leaders to do so, and the fate of society is being dictated by people who are not up to this task. Disturbed’s world view is much more bleak than Genesis’s commentary however; Genesis appears to think that leaders are doing their best, but that they do not have much skill or intellect while Disturbed appears to believe that governments are ruled by insane, power-mad, war-mongers.
In truth, I am sure that some governments are led by idiots while others are ruled by merciless tyrants, but – call me naive – I would like to think that most governments are made up of ordinary people doing their best but can only do so much. In this scenario, the masses still have to work at making the world better as they are just that – the masses. If a few honest leaders are working to improve the world, and everyone else is standing aside watching, nothing will ever get accomplished.

Fair enough. Well, at least if they are going to be tyrants, I would prefer them to be idiots as their plans of world domination may not succeed. 🙂

And your view about those two videos is, according to my humble knowledge, very accurate and interesting. Both clips leave us discomfortable, but indeed in a different way. And behind Disturbed’s apparently simplier ideas, lies a real message that should make us rethink some of our own views.
