Out Like Pluto's album, Take Cover, which I received a review copy of recently, is one of the best Punk albums I have heard in recent years.
The rhythm focussed music places emphasis focus on vocals, drums, and guitars but also makes use of other strings and keyboards. Among the influences, I can definitely hear No Doubt, and there seems to be traces of Garbage and Shiny Toy Guns. Also, Country seem to have influence the vocals in "Bridge" and several tracks have hints of Jazz and Blues in the music.
The lyrics are often dark and witty with subtle back-handed compliments. For example, in "Rocco" the line "I'd rather make mistakes with you than make no mistakes at all" is the opposite of the typical sentiment of wanting to experience bad times with the person than to not be with them. Another track, "Bridge", states that out of all of the bridges a character has burned, they "never bothered building one". There are so many references to alcohol ("Early Warning", "Starring John Stamos", "Are We There Yet?"), that I felt my liver die a little just listening to the album, but it was worth it. On "Autopilit" there is an interesting - not for its content, but for its inclusion - critique of the music; this left me wondering if it was criticism that Out Like Pluto had received.
As already stated, this is one of the best Punk albums I have heard recently. However, it is also thought provoking and musically diverse which should hold appeal to fans of many other genres.
