Pretty Hate Machine

Pretty Hate Machine is Nine Inch Nails' first album, but still has a polished sound that isn't often present in initial releases. The intros and outtros to all of the songs flow seamlessly into eachother and - if it weren't for the slight pause between tracks - would sound like one long song.
Most of the album is synthesizer heavy as is typical of other Industrial albums from the late 1980's and early 1990's such as Front by Front (Wax Trax!) by Front 242, although Pretty Hate Machine has a much more frenetic sound. Overall, the album has a softer feel than later albums such as Broken or The Downward Spiral and the mood is depressing instead of angry.
The sheer number of singles from this album is probably a good indicator of it's popularity. Themes discussed in the album include society's obsession with money ("Head Like a Hole"), questioning of faith ("Terrible Lie"), and relationship problems ("That's what I get").
Pretty Hate Machine is an extremely high quality album, and I highly recommend it to any Industrial fan.
