White Zombie's La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1 blends fast music with dialog from cult classic movies.
Numerous songs - including "Knuckle Duster (Radio 1-A)", "Thrust!", and "One Big Crunch" - have lines from George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead". Other tracks have lines from "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!". Others have lines from movies that I am unfamiliar with. And the title of one - "I am Legend" is named after a sci-fi novel.
Musically, there are also common themes between songs. For instance "Thunder Kiss '65" and "Thrust!" contain several sections with the same underlying theme. Even tracks that do not have portions of music in common feel similar in other ways. For instance, most of the tracks emphasize rhythm and focus mainly on the guitar and bass. There are a couple of exceptions however; "Grindhouse (A Go-Go)" places more importance on drums that many of the other songs, and "Starface" does not feel like it belongs on this album at all.
The similarities in musical feel should not suggest that the album is repetitive or boring though. Songs like "Thrust!" change throughout its length. Others, like "I am Legend" contain portions that focus on melody and almost sounds like hair-metal or progressive-metal in the beginning. And "Soul-Crusher" feels almost thrash-like and would feel at home next to anything from Megadeth's Rust in Peace in a play list.
The album does have a couple of flaws though. First, "Warp Asylum" starts to feel repetitive after awhile and goes on too long. Even though most of the non-intro tracks are over five minutes in length, this is the only one that exhibits this problem. "Spiderbaby (Yeah-Yeah-Yeah)" ends abruptly and feels like it should flow into "I am Legend" but does not. "Knuckle Duster (Radio 2-B)" does not tie into the rest of the album as well as the other intro tracks. And, as mentioned earlier, "Starface" sounds entirely different than the album as a whole.
Overall, this is a strong release with excellent short transitional songs to assist with moving from theme to theme on the album.
