I have had the privilege are reviewing the talented Mark Bruland's album BEEing Human thanks to the copy that I receieve from The Creative Service Company.
The artist is a bee keeper, so many of the tracks' have an out door theme; for instance: "A Cool Breeze For Louise", "Tom Parker's Wind Chimes", and "Alexander's Grove". Also, a number of songs such as "Beeing Human" and "e;Suite Honey Bee" have bee related names - and are punny, which I for one appreciate. It is clear that Mark put a lot of thought went into the naming of his music.
Many of the songs are relaxing (notable exceptions are "OMS Child" and "Richard's Horn") and are almost hymn-like in their sound. This is fitting as nature is often associated with meditation and reflection. This is not to say that the music is bland though as many works - such as "Natylee's Bench" - are extremely intricate.
Overall, this is a solid album with even the weakest songs (the title track "Beeing Human" and "Marking Time") earning a well-above average score. However, it seems odd to me that the two lowest scoring tracks are the bookends of the album; albums should start with something to really captivate the listener and end with a bang. This is not to say that the best songs should be on the ends, but tracks closer to the median should be. Another oddity is the track "My Laughing Heart" in which the voices of Mark and his daughter are present.
BEEing Human is a strong album that is relaxing and thought-provoking and belongs in the collection of anyone who appreciates modern Art Music.
