9 Days

Two weeks ago, Earth Prayer sent me a preview copy of their debut album 9 Days. Based on the name of the group, I was expecting a New Wave album and was surprised to find that it was mainstream Rock.

The overarching theme of 9 Days deals with relationships, specifically existential relationships. For instance, "Civil War" examines the disconnection from others due to differences in opinion. Likewise, "2000 Light Years from Home" illustrates the disconnection from others due to emotional distance. Continuing this trend, "Cruel" delves into the disconnection from others due to falling out of love. Ironically, "Sad" the song that shows the most connection to others, does so through mutual feelings of depression.

Earth Prayer makes heavy use of imagery to convey these messages. For example travel is used as a metaphor for distance between people in both "2000 Light Years from Home" and "747". Meanwhile, "Civil War" - as the name suggests - uses the the concep of civil war to examine to gulfs between people.

As for the music itself, I have already mentioned that 9 Days fits solidly into the mainstream Rock genre. There are some Blues influences on a couple of tracks - most notably "Halleluja" and "Freedom". "Breakdown" has a twangy guitar sound of Country Rock. Sometimes the guitar sounds like it was inspired by Hard Rock groups such as Guns N' Roses ("2000 Light Years fro m Home" in particular). But, for the most part, this album could easily blend in with music from any Classic Rock station.

For those who like Rock, this album should definitely be on you list of things to check out. The guitar work, drums, and female vocalist mesh extremely well and provide for a great listening experience.
