13 Arcane Hymns

The Unravelling's new release, 13 Arcane Hymns, which I was recently sent to review, has a very unique sound. However the sound should not be utterly foreign to metal aficionados.

In this album can be heard influences of several eminent groups. For instance, "Disconnect-Connect" is reminiscent of Tool. One of my personal favorites, "Fire Breather" has undertones of more recent Megadeth. Other tracks have hints of Dio era Black Sabbath, Metallica, System of a Down, and Slayer. Yet, even with these styles poking through, the overall style remains their own unique sound.

Like the bulk of the genre, vocals, drums, and electric guitar drive most of the tracks. There is a mix of clean guitar - such as in "In The Safe House" and "Disconnect-Connect" - and distorted guitar. The drum, which is some of the best that I have heard recently, really makes the album great; the song that best exemplifies the drum style is "Becoming Chaos". A track that epitomizes the guitar-work, I would suggest listening to "Last Rights Protest".

Another notable feature of this 13 Arcane Hymns is that the quality between tracks is extremely consistent. Many artists - including well known, widely popular ones - have track quality that jumps all over the scale. No track on this album feels like filler or that it was left unfinished. This is a lesson that many in the industry could stand to learn.

I would strongly recommend this album to a wide variety of metal fans as the musical undertones pull from so much of the genre that it should be appealing to almost everyone; from fans of Dokken to Iron Maiden to Disturbed.
